Leonardo Bonucci has not had what you’d call a typical summer, hitting the headlines for his supposed involvement in the Calcioscommesse scandal, before having his name rightly cleared. He has received words of support in abundance: the affection of Bianconeri fans and the backing of the club and his team-mates, who handed him the captain’s armband for the summer friendlies.

Now the Super Cup in Beijing. A success which feels extra special for Leonardo. “I knew I was innocent so I’ve always gone around with my head held high. Justice has been served and the truth came out. Bonucci was cleared, Bonucci starts in the Super Cup, we win the Super Cup. We must make sure this is just the beginning, we have a long and demanding season ahead. Mentally the game was challenging for two reasons, because behind me I had all that’s gone on away from the pitch, and in front of me dangerous opponents on the field of play. We came good though.
