Granada have confirmed that midfielder Jon Toral has returned to Arsenal after the Gunners chose to activate a recall option in his contract. His return makes the possibility of a loan move to Rangers all the more likely.

The Spaniard was sent on a season-long loan to Granada in the summer but has made just six appearances for the club.

The 21-year-old impressed with Birmingham City last term – scoring eight goals in 33 appearances – and was part of Arsenal's summer tour to the far east at the end of the last campaign. However, Granada confirmed in a brief statement that the midfielder has returned to the Emirates.

"Arsenal Football Club has decided to activate the option they had in the winter to recover Jon Toral, who maintained a link with the Granada CF assignment," they wrote. "In this way, the player ceases to belong to Granada from today and undertakes a new football challenge.

"Granada CF wants to wish the best of luck to a player who always defended with absolute professionalism our shield and that was the author of a beautiful goal against Osasuna in Copa del Rey this season."
