Rafael VAN DER VAART announces quitting: "I'd like to have become a football veteran"

Interviewed by De Telegraaf, former Tottenham, Real Madrid and Dutch NT attacking midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart announced quitting playing pro football at 35: "I joined Esbjerg because I wanted to play, not to follow a recovery program. And now I need to stop, in order to be happy. I'd like to have become a football senior, a veteran, but that's not possible. I  played a lot, and won trophies, both in big clubs and national team. I had the honour to face football champions, and walk on the best football grounds around. I just have to thank football, for all the beautiful things it made me experience, as well as all my past teammates, clubs, fans".
