In a crucial match for both sides between Wales and Turkey in Baku in Group A Matchday 2, it was the Welsh who came out on top 2-0 to all but clinch a spot in the last 16, as Turkey's chances to advance look dire after their second loss in a row.

The match saw the Welsh get out to a better start, while Turkey looked to defend and hit on the counter. Wales had a good chance with Ramsey in the opening 10 minutes of the match, but the Juventus man fired his shot straight at Cakir. Ramsey had another chance midway through the first half, but overhit his shot over the bar. This was only a prelude of things to come however, as the Welsh midfielder's third time was the charm, when he capitalized on a beautiful Bale pass and he beat the offside trap to find himself face to face with the Turkey goalkeeper and he beat him with a shot on the bottom left to put Wales on top 1-0 on the verge of halftime.

Turkey came out more aggressive in the second half, knowing full well that a defeat would all but seal their fate at Euro 2020, and created a handful of chances, the most dangerous being Burak Yilmaz's volley from a corner kick that cleared the Welsh goal over the bar. Bale had the chance to put the game out of danger for the Welsh, but first he missed a penalty kick over the bar and a few seconds later he wasn't able to redirect a mistake by the Turkish goalkeeper when a clearance was intercepted by the Tottenham forward and his shot went just wide. The second goal came in stoppage time, courtesy of Connor Roberts, who slotted home a Bale's pass, sealing Wales' win and almost assuredly knocking Turkey out of the competition.
