Cruz Azul defeats Santos Laguna in the first leg of LigaMX final
In a tense and hard-fought match, it was Cruz Azul that came out on top against Santos Laguna to carry a slim advantage going into the second leg to be played at Estadio Azteca on Sunday.
Santos came out more aggressive in the first phases of the match, while Cruz Azul seemed content waiting for los laguneros and trying to hurt Santos on the counter. In a match with few chances, it wasn't until the end of the first half when La Maquina brought some danger to the Santos goal with their main man Jonathan Rodriguez, but Matheus Doria at first and Carlos Acevedo later denied the striker.
In the second half it was still Santos that had the lion's share of possession, but the Torreon side was not able to convert it to clear chances. Finally it was Cruz Azul that broke through for the opening and only goal of the match in the 70th minute, thanks to Luis Romo. At that point Santos went on the attack with everything they had, but to no avail. They will now have to travel to the Azteca where they will be forced to win if they want to at least force extra time.
