In a new report by Spanish outlet Marca, Chelsea seem to have entered the race to sign Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane.

While in the past few days it seemed likely that Manchester United were going to land the Frenchman, now Chelsea is trying to play the spoiler, as the Blues have reportedly inquired about the possibility of acquiring the French defender. While Real have submitted a formal renewal proposal to the player, Varane seems set on joining a new club in the Premier League sooner or later. His deal with Madrid expires next year, so the merengues would like to sell him this year to monetize his departure. While they value the defender around 70M Euros, Perez's demands should come down from that figure as Varane is in the second-to-last year of his deal and Real desperately need to bring fresh capital in after the club registered 300M Euros in revenue losses due to the pandemic. This then could represent a good opportunity for Chelsea to secure a very good defender for below-market value.

Varane joined Real Madrid in 2011, and in his 10-years with los blancos he played in 236 matches, scoring 8 goals. He's also represented France 79 times, most recently at Euro 2020 where they were surprisingly knocked out of the tournament in the round of last 16 by neighbors Switzerland on penalties.
