When Premier League clubs met on Thursday to debate the FIFA reform of the international calendar, they unified in their opposition to ideas for biennial World Cups.

The 20 nations also voiced their opposition to FIFA's proposal to lower the number of international men's matches from five to two per year.

“The Premier League is committed to preventing any radical changes to the post-2024 FIFA international match calendar that would adversely affect player welfare and threaten the competitiveness, calendar, structures and traditions of domestic football.

“We are open to reforms and new ideas, but they must enhance the complementary balance between domestic and international football in order to improve the game at all levels," Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in a statement after declining to be interviewed.

Infantino has stated that instead of maintaining quadrennial cycles, FIFA could organize a men's or women's World Cup every year to attract young fans, allow more countries the opportunity to qualify, and provide more competitive games more frequently.
