United were linked with the England international throughout the summer, but were reportedly hesitant – or unable – to pay the Hammers' lofty £100 million asking price.

According to recent reports, despite being rebuffed in the previous window, the Red Devils still see Rice as the best option for improving their midfield difficulties.

According to the Daily Mail, instead of discussing life after Rice, Hammers manager David Moyes plans to construct a European-quality team around the England master.

"There was a bargain to be had with Declan at £100m," the former United boss remarked of his swiftly improving ace. That deal is no longer available."

A projected monetary injection from new co-owner and businessman Daniel Kretinsky is also likely to boost the Londoners' ambitions to become a genuine Premier League power.
