PREMIER - Ransford on receiving honorary doctorate: today is bittersweet

Marcus Rashford of Manchester United said it was bittersweet to get the honorary doctorate barely a day after the Universal Credit boost was revoked in an interview with BBC Breakfast (h/t Daily Mail).
The Manchester United player has made it a point to give back to society by assisting children and teenagers all around the country. Rashford, a native of England, has spearheaded the charge against lawmakers who have cited Covid-19 as a reason to withhold aid during the outbreak.
The 23-year-old earned an honorary degree for his contributions to the community, but in his acceptance speech, the Englishman continued to discuss issues affecting youngsters.
‘I’m here to receive my honorary doctorate for my work around child poverty. Yesterday, millions of families across the UK lost a lifeline and a means of staying afloat. ‘A move that could see child poverty rise to one in three children. For that reason, today is bittersweet. It’s time that representatives got out into communities like mine. It’s time they saw first-hand the true measure of struggle. Covid-19 can no longer be used as an excuse.’
