UEFA and CONMEBOL confirmed on Tuesday that Italy and Argentina will play in a first meeting between the winners of the Euro and the Copa America in June 2022.

The game will take place "during the international window in June 2022 at a site to be announced," according to a joint statement from the European and South American governing organizations.

"The agreement reached by the two organisations currently covers three editions of this match between the respective continental winners," the communique said.

The news comes amid a growing turf war between the two most powerful soccer confederations and FIFA, the world's governing body.

FIFA's newly announced proposal to quadruple the frequency of its World Cups has been met with opposition from UEFA and CONMEBOL.

The two continental organisations claim that this would throw their calendars off and put their continental events in jeopardy.

In a joint statement, UEFA and CONMEBOL said the match between their champions "is part of the expansion of UEFA and CONMEBOL's cooperation, which notably includes women's football, futsal and youth categories, the exchange of referees, as well as technical training schemes," and that they would open a joint office in London.
