The Spanish minister of culture and sport (CSD) told AFP on Tuesday that the Spanish government has filed an email to the European Court of Justice explaining the legal basis behind its opposition to the European Super League.

According to CSD sources, the email reflected the government's position that "improving contests is feasible through debate and always through existing procedures."

After a commercial court in Madrid determined that any punishment would be an infraction of European free trade laws, UEFA first launched disciplinary proceedings against the three surviving clubs but backed down last month.

Even though the other nine teams, including Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, AC Milan, and Inter Milan, all withdrew in April, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus remain committed to the concept.
