LIGA MX - Jonathan Rodriguez rejoins Cruz Azul after Copa America
Cruz Azul can finally breathe a little easier. Their standout striker, Jonathan Rodriguez rejoined La Maquina Cementera late Sunday night after a holiday period following the end of the Copa America that he played with Uruguay.
Rodriguez is expected to feature for Cruz Azul on Matchday 3 of the Apertura 2021, when the current Mexican champions will pay a visit to Necaxa in Aguascalientes in search of their first three points of the campaign. The Mexico City club has been underwhelming so far, winning one point out of a possible six after they were surprisingly beaten by Mazatlan on Matchday 1 and tied with Santos Laguna on Matchday 2.
No doubt the absences of important players like Orbelin Pineda and Rodriguez played a factor in the poor run of form; now that both players are set to come back to the club, Cruz Azul hopes their fortunes improve, as they try to defend their title. Rodriguez was an important piece in the championship run last tournament, as he netted 11 goals with 4 assists for the club.
