Canada's bid to reach the greatest platform in international soccer for the second time got off to a shaky start on Thursday.

The last round of CONCACAF 2022 World Cup qualifying started today at BMO Field in Toronto, with hosts Canada and Honduras trading penalties on each side of the half in a 1-1 draw.

The starting XI for Canada was probably the best of John Herdman's career. Atiba Hutchinson returned to the fold in midfield to partner with the outstanding Stephen Eustaquio, while Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich led an assault that comprised Jonathan David and Cyle Larin.

In a first half that benefited the visitor, all that firepower didn't amount to anything.

Despite the result, Herdman was happy with Canada's inspired showing after the break.

"I think we got to see the real potential of this team in the second half," Herdman told reporters post-match.

"The key for us is that we've dropped two points tonight and we have to make those up," he added.
