According to Hernan Castillo and Roy Nemer, Javier Mascherano will be the new coach of Argentina's U20 national team. Fernando Batista, who will join Jose Pekerman with the Venezuelan national squad, will be replaced by the former Barcelona player.

Mascherano had an illustrious and long career at the top level. The Argentine, who was born in San Lorenzo in 1984, made his name at River Plate before joining Corinthians in Brazil. After that, he had successful periods in England with West Ham and Liverpool before joining Barcelona at Camp Nou in 2010.

Mascherano, a defensive midfielder-turned-centre-back, spent eight years with Barcelona, winning everything there is to win (including five La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues) before a stint with Hebei China Fortune in China.

After a season with Estudiantes in Argentina, he resigned from football last year. Over the course of 15 years, he made 147 appearances for the Argentine national team.
