Modrić returns to Europa League after 15 years as Croatian makes European debut for AC Milan
A landmark moment unfolded in Salzburg when Rúben Amorim brought Luka Modrić on in the 61st minute. With AC Milan leading 3-0, the Portuguese coach replaced Adrien Rabiot with the Croatian midfielder, marking a remarkable return to the Europa League after a 15-year absence.
It was Modrić’s first European appearance in an AC Milan shirt and his 15th appearance in the competition overall, having last featured in it back in 2011.
Modrić’s last Europa League appearance came in 2011
It was 30 November 2011 when Modrić made the last of his previous 14 appearances in the competition. At the time, he was playing for Tottenham Hotspur, who hosted Greek side PAOK Thessaloniki at the old White Hart Lane. The visitors claimed a surprise 2-1 victory that evening. Modrić’s first 12 appearances in the competition had come earlier in his career, when it was still known as the UEFA Cup and he was playing for Dinamo Zagreb.
