Franck Kessie transfer: Juventus move to hold off Roma in race for midfielder
Franck Kessie is available as a free agent following the end of his spell in Saudi Arabia and has been on Juventus’ radar for several weeks. The Ivory Coast international has so far given priority to the Bianconeri, helped by his strong relationship with sporting director Frederic Massara from their time together at Milan.
Roma have now complicated the picture. The capital club held talks with Kessie’s representatives on Tuesday evening as Gian Piero Gasperini looks to add experience and physical presence to his midfield.
Juventus prepare contract for Kessie
Juventus are offering Kessie a two-year contract with an option for a third season. The club had initially hoped to complete further midfield departures before finalising the signing, but Roma’s intervention could force them to make a decision sooner.
Fabio Miretti’s move to Besiktas has already freed up some space in the squad, although Juventus had been considering whether another departure was necessary before committing to Kessie. That hesitation has given Roma an opportunity.
Gasperini reunion adds intrigue to Roma move
Roma’s interest has an obvious sporting connection. Gasperini worked with Kessie at Atalanta, where the midfielder first established himself in Serie A before joining Milan. The 29-year-old would bring physical presence, experience and the ability to contribute at both ends of the pitch. Those qualities appeal to both clubs as they look for an immediate boost rather than a player who would need a lengthy adaptation period.
Juventus still appear to have the advantage because of Kessie’s preference for their project, but that advantage can no longer be taken for granted.
With Roma now actively involved and the transfer deadline approaching, Juventus must decide whether to complete the deal without waiting for another departure. What had looked like a relatively straightforward signing has suddenly developed into one of Serie A’s more intriguing late-window battles.
