Manchester City sign Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille in deal worth up to €100m
Manchester City have completed the signing of Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for €95m plus a possible €5m in add-ons, making an extraordinary investment in the 18-year-old midfielder.
Bouaddi has signed a five-year contract and will join Enzo Maresca's first-team squad immediately rather than being treated purely as a long-term development project.
The size of the fee reflects how quickly his reputation has grown. Despite his age, Bouaddi had already made 96 senior appearances for Lille before completing the move to England.
Bouaddi arrives amid major City midfield changes
Manchester City's midfield looks markedly different from the one that began last season. Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Tijjani Reijnders and Nico González have all left or are leaving, while City have committed significant resources to building the next version of the team.
Bouaddi follows the arrival of Elliott Anderson, another major investment in the centre of the pitch.
The teenager is capable of playing as a deeper midfielder and has attracted particular attention for his composure in possession, positional awareness and ability to receive the ball under pressure.
City pay for potential and immediate quality
A fee approaching €100m for an 18-year-old inevitably creates expectations, but City's calculation is based on both current ability and potential resale value. Bouaddi has already experienced European football and senior international competition, meaning he arrives with a level of experience unusual for a player of his age.
His challenge will be adjusting to the speed and physical demands of the Premier League while competing for a place in a midfield that remains under construction.
City's business may not be finished either. Despite the arrival of Bouaddi, the club continue to be associated with further midfield reinforcements, with Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez among the players under consideration.
The signing therefore looks less like the final piece of City's rebuild than another major step in it.
