Zachary Athekame is earning rave reviews in France. The country’s leading sports newspapers devoted extensive coverage to the Swiss right-back’s outstanding display in Lyon’s 2-1 win over Nice, including his superb assist for Tessmann’s goal to double their lead. The Milan-owned youngster, born in 2004, has made rapid progress under Paulo Fonseca, who put his faith in him from the outset. His performances are also good news for Milan: he will return a more mature player, with a market value at least twice the roughly €10 million fee Igli Tare agreed with Young Boys.

Lyon supporters have taken Athekame to their hearts, impressed by the personality and technical ability he has shown from day one. His figures underline his emergence as one of Ligue 1’s leading right-backs: in just seven appearances, he has already registered two goals and three assists.

Although PSG’s Achraf Hakimi remains ahead of him overall, Athekame’s numbers speak for themselves and offer plenty of encouragement for the future. Milan are delighted with his development and convinced they made the right decision during the summer transfer window. The loan spell is delivering the results they hoped for, helping develop a talent who could establish himself as a mainstay at right-back for Milan next season.
