Manchester City consider Enzo Fernandez move as Chelsea hold out for £120m
Manchester City could make a late move for Enzo Fernandez despite Chelsea valuing the Argentina international at around £120m.
City have already spent heavily on their midfield this summer, most recently completing a deal worth up to €100m for Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi, but the scale of the departures from the Etihad means another significant addition has not been ruled out.
Fernandez remains one of the most ambitious possibilities under consideration.
Chelsea valuation remains major obstacle
Chelsea's stance has been firm throughout the summer. They regard Fernandez as one of their most important midfielders and have placed a valuation of around £120m on the Argentina international. Manager Xabi Alonso has publicly described Fernandez as a Chelsea player and an important member of the squad but stopped short of offering an absolute guarantee over his future when questioned earlier in the window. That has left a narrow opening for City, although any deal would require another enormous financial commitment.
City midfield has been transformed
The interest needs to be understood in the context of City's wider overhaul. Rodri has moved to Barcelona, while Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders have also left. Nico González is joining Newcastle. Elliott Anderson and Bouaddi have arrived, but Fernandez would add a different blend of experience, passing range and control at the highest level.
City do not need to buy Fernandez simply to make up numbers. Any move would be about adding an established elite midfielder to a group that has become considerably younger.
The difficulty is obvious: convincing Chelsea to sell a leading player to a direct Premier League rival in the final week of the window would require an exceptional offer. For now, Fernandez remains at Stamford Bridge. But with City raising funds through a series of high-profile sales, the possibility of one more major move before the deadline cannot yet be dismissed.
