Brighton strengthen defence with Costinha signing on five-year deal. Hurzeler: “He understands what we value”
“Brighton have reached an agreement to sign defender Costinha from Olympiacos.” With that official statement, the Seagulls confirmed another summer reinforcement for Fabian Hurzeler, with the Portuguese right-back arriving from Olympiacos FC.
The 26-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Premier League club, running until 2031, “subject to international clearance and the completion of the usual regulatory approvals”.
Head coach Fabian Hurzeler introduced the new arrival in glowing terms: “Costinha is a player we have been following closely for some time. He has the defensive ability, intensity and understanding of what we value, and we believe he will be an excellent addition to the squad,” the German coach told Brighton’s official channels.
“He is comfortable both in and out of possession and will increase competition at right-back, alongside the options we already have. I am delighted that he has chosen to continue his development with us in the Premier League.”
Costinha’s full name is João Pedro Loureiro da Costa. He began his career in Portugal, coming through the youth ranks before making his senior breakthrough with Rio Ave FC, where he gained valuable experience in Liga Portugal from a young age.
His performances in his homeland earned him a move to Olympiacos FC in 2024, where he went on to make 74 appearances.
