Malick Fofana wants Lyon stay if Champions League place is secured
Malick Fofana's future at Lyon could depend heavily on Wednesday night's Champions League play-off against Fenerbahçe, with the Belgium international keen to remain if the French club qualify for the league phase.
Fofana has attracted interest during the summer and remains one of the most valuable players in the Lyon squad, making him an obvious candidate for a sale should the club need to raise significant funds.
The winger, however, has told team-mates that he would like to stay and play Champions League football with Lyon.
Champions League money could change Lyon's position
The financial consequences of qualification are substantial. Lyon's recent economic difficulties have made transfer income particularly important, but reaching the Champions League league phase would provide the club with a valuable new revenue stream. That would reduce, although not necessarily eliminate, the pressure to sell one of their leading assets before the market closes. Fofana therefore finds himself in the unusual position of being able to influence his own transfer future on the pitch. A strong performance against Fenerbahçe could help Lyon qualify and, in doing so, make his departure less necessary.
Fofana expected to start decisive second leg
The first meeting in Istanbul finished 1-1, leaving everything open ahead of the return at the Groupama Stadium. Fofana is expected to start on the left side of Lyon's attack alongside Loïs Openda and Ernest Nuamah. Paulo Fonseca is likely to return to the majority of the side rested for the weekend's Ligue 1 victory at Toulouse.
For Lyon, qualification would be both a sporting achievement and a powerful piece of transfer-market leverage. Instead of approaching the final days of the window from a position of financial necessity, they would have greater freedom to decide which players should stay. Few players embody that equation more clearly than Fofana. Ninety minutes against Fenerbahçe could significantly alter the final week of his summer.
