Donyell Malen transfer value rises after spectacular start to Roma season
Donyell Malen's remarkable form at Roma is beginning to attract attention beyond Serie A after the Netherlands forward opened the new league season with a hat-trick against Fiorentina.
The performance continued a transformation that began last season when Malen was used increasingly as a centre-forward rather than in the wide role that had defined much of his earlier career.
It has proved a significant tactical change. Malen scored 14 goals in 18 matches during the second half of last season and immediately resumed that form with three more on the opening weekend.
Roma's €25m investment already looks different
Roma exercised their option to make Malen's move permanent for around €25m after his initial spell in the Italian capital. At the time, it represented a calculated investment in a forward who had enjoyed periods of success without fully establishing himself as an elite-level centre-forward at Borussia Dortmund or Aston Villa. His performances in Rome have changed that perception rapidly. Operating closer to goal has maximised his acceleration and movement while reducing the amount of time he spends receiving possession in less dangerous wide areas.
Barcelona and Atletico links emerge
Reports in Spain have linked Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Manchester City with the Dutch international as major clubs continue to search for attacking options before the deadline. At this stage, those links should be separated from an active negotiation. There is no suggestion that Roma have agreed to sell Malen or that a formal bid has been accepted.
What is clear is that his market position has changed considerably.
A player Roma acquired permanently for €25m is now producing at a level that would make it extremely difficult to replace him for the same amount.
That gives the Italian club a strong position. Unless an exceptional proposal arrives, keeping one of Serie A's most in-form forwards would appear considerably more valuable than cashing in immediately. Malen's next task is ensuring that an outstanding six months becomes something more permanent.
