Kang-in Lee sparks shirt sales boom at Atlético Madrid before even arriving in Spain
Kang-in Lee's arrival has already sent Atlético Madrid supporters into a frenzy. The 25-year-old has officially joined the Spanish club from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal worth around €40m, and demand for his shirt has soared despite the fact he has yet to arrive in Madrid.
Record-breaking demand
According to Marca, the early figures underline the commercial impact of Lee's signing. The South Korea international has already generated record-breaking shirt sales before even making his debut for the club. No previous Atlético signing - including high-profile arrivals such as Julián Alvarez - had sold as many shirts before playing a single match.
Administrative formalities delaying arrival
Lee has not yet travelled to the Spanish capital because he must first complete administrative formalities in South Korea. Although he was exempted from compulsory military service after helping South Korea win gold at the 2023 Asian Games, he still has to complete the administrative process required to enrol in the country's alternative service programme for elite athletes and artists. Once those formalities have been completed, Lee will be free to travel to Madrid and begin training with his new team-mates.
