Julian Alvarez misses Atletico training as Barcelona and Arsenal monitor future
Julián Álvarez was absent from Atlético Madrid training on Wednesday because of illness, adding another development to a transfer saga that has dominated the closing stages of the Spanish window.
The Argentina international's absence was officially attributed to an indisposition rather than his future, and there is no indication that the striker refused to train. Even so, the timing inevitably attracts attention. Álvarez's relationship with Atlético has become strained after he made clear his desire for a different challenge, with Barcelona his preferred destination.
Atletico remain determined to resist Barcelona
Atlético have maintained a strong position throughout the summer and are particularly reluctant to strengthen a direct domestic rival. Álvarez remains under a long-term contract and the Madrid club have repeatedly signalled that they will not be pressured into a sale on terms they consider unfavourable. The mood around the player has also changed. He was jeered by sections of the Atlético support during his recent appearance against Villarreal, reflecting frustration over the uncertainty surrounding his future.
Arsenal offer an alternative to Barcelona
Arsenal have retained an interest in bringing Álvarez back to the Premier League and have the financial strength to make a substantial proposal. The more difficult challenge may be convincing the player. Barcelona have long held an attraction for Álvarez, while the Catalan club's ability to finance a deal of this scale remains the central issue.
That has created an unusual stand-off: the player's preferred club faces the greatest financial obstacles, while the suitor best placed to meet Atlético's demands may not be his first choice.
Wednesday's missed training session should not be interpreted as a transfer protest. It does, however, arrive at a moment when every development around Álvarez is being scrutinised. With the deadline approaching, Atlético, Barcelona, Arsenal and the player are running out of time to find a solution.
