Weston McKennie, midfielder for the United States, has been ordered back to Italy and will miss his second consecutive World Cup qualifier for violating the COVID-19 regulations.

Coach Gregg Berhalter of the United States made the news on Monday, a day after the United States and Canada drew 1-1.

McKennie, one of the team's captains, started last Thursday's 0-0 tie with El Salvador. He was not permitted to be on the roster for Sunday's game.

"Weston will return to Italy and will be unavailable for the match against Honduras due to a violation of team policy,” Berhalter said in a statement. “There are high expectations for those who are a part of the U.S. men’s national team, and in order to be successful it’s important that everyone in the group is accountable.”
