NATIONS - Referee Kateryna Monzul praised for outstanding performance
Kateryna Monzul, the first woman to referee an England men's international match, has received a lot of acclaim from football fans.
For England's World Cup qualifier versus Andorra, an all-female officiating staff has been chosen. Ukraine's Kateryna Monzul was in charge of the match, with deputy referees Maryna Striletska and Svitlana Grushko.
The VAR was Stephanie Frappart of France, who in March became the first woman to officiate a World Cup qualifying match.
As the Three Lions trounced Andorra 5-0, Monzul received a lot of acclaim on Twitter.
On one social networking platform, a user wrote:
"This ref has been pretty spot on, I can't lie", while another posted: "Tell you what, you wouldn't argue with this lady ref in the England game!!!"
"Absolutely loving Kateryna Monzul in this game," another Twitter user wrote. "First ever female ref for an England game. Flawless. Of course, that's its own issue: she's had to be 100 times better than the men to get here. Nevertheless, she's brilliant and just seeing her is a real buzz."
