Former Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand claimed on Thursday that the racist abuse thrown at black England players after they missed penalties in the Euro 2020 final was "disheartening."

After failing to convert spot-kicks against Italy at Wembley in July, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka were targeted online.

Ferdinand was testifying before a parliamentary committee that was looking for input on the British government's draft Online Safety Bill.

He discussed the devastating effects that such abuse may have on individuals and their families.

"I've seen members of my family disintegrate at times, I've seen other sports stars' family members taking it worse than the actual person who's receiving the abuse," he said.

He also said that it was "baffling" that social media firms could act so swiftly on copyright concerns but not on discrimination.
