NATIONS - Southgate on Smith Rowe debut and Gerrard move to Villa

Gareth Southgate spoke to the media ahead of England's match against Albania on Thursday night, discussing Gerrard's move to Aston Villa and Rowe's first appearance for his country.

On Emile Smith Rowe debut

“We have brought him here with a view to being involved in the two matches. He has settled really well. He knows a couple of club mates and Phil [Foden] from the Under-17s as well.

“His quality has been apparent in training. He’s ready.

“Whenever players are here training, it’s an opportunity to transfer across. That’s what we want, that type of club environment where there is an actual progression.

“Emile was close to being in the original squad when we announced it so we had no hesitation in moving him across.”

On Steven Gerrard

“He’s always had fantastic leadership qualities and great drive. He’s had a fabulous start to his managerial career and leaves one massive club for another.

“It’s a great opportunity for him and a chance to test himself in a league where there’s a different, high level challenge every week.”
