Crazy idea of a Cancelo return to FC Inter: loan deal possible if Al Hilal share the wages
Could João Cancelo make a surprise return to Inter in the January transfer window? The idea exists, it is far from straightforward, but it should not be completely ruled out. That is the key revelation from today’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, which recalls how the 31-year-old Portuguese full-back – formerly of Inter and Juventus – has fallen out with Al Hilal and is keen to move on from Saudi Arabia. His aim is clear: to secure regular minutes in order to earn a place at the next World Cup with Portugal.
Cancelo wants to return to Europe, and his agent Jorge Mendes has already begun working the phones, acting as a diplomatic go-between with several clubs – Inter among them. The Nerazzurri, where Cancelo previously felt at home, would be open to welcoming him back, ideally on a loan deal. The main stumbling block, however, is his salary. Cancelo currently earns around €15m net per season. Even halving that figure would still be too much for Inter, meaning any negotiations would require Al Hilal to contribute towards his wages.
Meanwhile, according to the Gazzetta, the relationship between Cancelo and his current coach Simone Inzaghi has effectively broken down. Tensions reportedly surfaced very early on, in the first few weeks of working together, and the situation has since reached breaking point.
