Mourinho sacked but leaves richer: Marca reports €15m pay-off

José Mourinho is no longer head coach of Fenerbahçe. Following the Champions League play-off defeat to Benfica, the Istanbul club’s board decided to part ways with the Special One, who had only taken charge in June 2024. The decision came after a run of disappointing results: domestically Galatasaray continued to dominate, while in Europe it was a second successive failure to reach the Champions League knockout stage.
Mourinho’s spell in Turkey leaves a mixed legacy. Brought in with high expectations to restore Fenerbahçe to the summit, the Portuguese was unable to deliver the anticipated breakthrough either in the Süper Lig or on the continental stage. If on the pitch his stint ended in failure, financially Mourinho walks away well rewarded. According to Spanish daily Marca, the former Real Madrid, Chelsea and Inter manager will pocket a hefty compensation package worth around €15m. A remarkable figure, given the split comes after just 14 months in the job.
As for what comes next, the Special One’s future remains open. At 62, Mourinho is still a big name and could soon be back in the frame for another post in European football.
