Ter Stegen to Girona hinges on two factors: Germany set World Cup ultimatum
Marc-André ter Stegen’s future continues to dominate the headlines. According to Sky Sports Germany, Girona are exploring the possibility of signing the 33-year-old goalkeeper on loan from Barcelona in January. Contacts have already taken place between the clubs, but the final decision rests largely with ter Stegen himself and the Blaugrana.
Girona head coach Míchel has spoken publicly about the links, making no secret of his admiration for the German international:
“He’s an absolutely world-class player. Everyone would like to have a ter Stegen in their team.”
In Spain, however, opinion is divided. Some outlets are convinced ter Stegen is open to a loan move to avoid missing out on the 2026 World Cup, while others insist the goalkeeper is determined to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place. The problem is that Hansi Flick appears to have made his choice, with Joan García identified as his first-choice keeper.
According to the German broadcaster, ter Stegen is still regarded by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann as Germany’s designated number one for next summer’s World Cup – but only on one condition: that he plays regularly at club level. Ter Stegen’s contract with Barcelona runs until 2028.
