Marco Palestra is a Chelsea player, with the club confirming his arrival from Atalanta. The Blues announced the deal in an official statement: “Chelsea are delighted to announce the signing of Italy international Marco Palestra from Serie A club Atalanta. The 21-year-old has signed a contract until 2033 and will join his new team-mates for pre-season under head coach Xabi Alonso.

Palestra to Chelsea becomes one of the most expensive full-back deals in football history
Marco Palestra is now officially one of the most expensive full-backs in the history of the game. The Italian wide defender, who has completed his move to Chelsea, will earn Atalanta €57m, plus €3m in bonuses and a 10% sell-on clause on any future transfer.

Palestra will not merely enter the all-time top 10 for full-back transfers; he will do so in a lofty position. If the bonuses are triggered - regardless of any future resale - he could match Marc Cucurella, who appears in this ranking twice.

The most expensive full-backs in transfer-market history
Lucas Hernandez - 2019, from Atlético Madrid to Bayern Munich - €80m
Achraf Hakimi - 2021, from Inter Milan to Paris Saint-Germain - €68m
Marc Cucurella - 2019, from Brighton & Hove Albion to Chelsea - €65m
João Cancelo - 2019, from Juventus to Manchester City - €65m
Marc Cucurella - 2026, from Chelsea to Real Madrid- €60m
Ben White - 2021, from Brighton & Hove Albion to Arsenal - €58m
Benjamin Mendy - 2017, from AS Monaco to Manchester City - €57.5m
Marco Palestra - 2026, from Atalanta to Chelsea - €57m
Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 2019, from Crystal Palace to Manchester United - €55m
Kyle Walker - 2017, from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester City - €53m

Marco Palestra is the third-most expensive Italian player ever - but perhaps not for long
Marco Palestra has officially become one of the most expensive Italian footballers of all time. Chelsea’s new wide defender, signed from Atalanta, has cost €57m, plus €3m in bonuses and a 10% sell-on clause. That figure is enough to put him in the top three, edging him ahead of Jorginho thanks to the bonus structure attached to the deal, some of which is expected to be triggered and could push the final fee even higher.

At the same time, his place on the podium may not last long. Sandro Tonali, already second on the list, is currently in talks over a move to Tottenham Hotspur worth more than €100m. If completed, that deal would give him both the first and, at that point, the third-most expensive transfer involving an Italian player.
