It was not a positive World Cup outing for Teun Koopmeiners in the tournament being staged across the United States, Mexico and Canada. The Juventus FC midfielder was introduced late on in the match that saw the Netherlands draw 2-2 with Japan.

It was a result that left a bitter taste for Oranje supporters, who criticised not only Ronald Koeman’s side but also the performance of the Bianconeri midfielder himself. The numbers leave little room for interpretation: just four touches in the 25 minutes he spent on the pitch, only one completed pass and two shots, both well off target.

Koopmeiners heading for Juventus exit
The midfielder is, in effect, on his way out of Juventus. The former Atalanta BC player is no longer part of Luciano Spalletti’s plans, with his agent having visited Continassa in recent days. During that meeting, he was informed of the club’s decision not to continue relying on his client, who has endured two disappointing seasons in a Juventus shirt.

From shop window to potential boomerang

The World Cup was supposed to be an important shop window for Koopmeiners. Strong performances could have helped him catch the eye and attract a new buyer. The risk, however, after analysing his display against Japan, is that the opportunity may instead turn into a boomerang.
