By coming on in the 1-1 draw against Sweden at the 2026 World Cup, Yuto Nagatomo wrote an indelible page in football history.

The 39-year-old Samurai Blue defender has now appeared at a fifth World Cup finals, becoming the first Japanese player - and the first footballer from anywhere in Asia - to reach the landmark.

With this historic appearance, the former Inter Milan full-back joins one of the game’s most exclusive clubs. Nagatomo is only the 10th player in football history to feature in five different World Cup tournaments.

It is an extraordinary record, and a fitting tribute to the longevity and remarkable international career of the Japanese veteran.
