Arsenal have seen their first official offer for Bruno Guimarães rejected, after intermediaries presented a verbal proposal worth less than £60m.

Newcastle United have no intention of parting with the 28-year-old Brazil midfielder, who is under contract at St James’ Park until 2028 and is currently involved at the 2026 World Cup, where he is preparing for the last-32 tie against Japan.

Since joining from Lyon in January 2022, Guimarães has become one of Newcastle’s undisputed leaders, making more than 150 appearances and scoring 30 goals in the Premier League. He is regarded as a key figure both for his club and in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil side.

Gordon has already gone, Tonali is at risk and now Arsenal are pushing for Guimarães

Despite the lucrative sale of Anthony Gordon to FC Barcelona for £69.3m, Newcastle’s hierarchy are determined to keep hold of their captain.

That firm stance also extends to Sandro Tonali, who has attracted interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.

Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta has long been an admirer of Guimarães, but the wall put up by Newcastle means the Gunners will have to return with a far more substantial offer if they are to have any genuine chance of prising the Brazilian midfielder away from St James’ Park.
