To put it mildly, Álvaro Morata has endured one of the most disappointing seasons of his career.

His first campaign as a marquee signing for Como 1907 ended in disappointment on virtually every front: visible frustration on the pitch, no league goals to his name, an adductor injury that disrupted his season, and the emergence of Anastasios Douvikas, who finished as the second-highest scorer in Serie A.

Cesc Fàbregas attempted to give the Spanish striker opportunities and confidence, particularly during the early stages of the 2025/26 season. However, once the race for a Champions League place intensified, the Como manager increasingly turned to the Greek forward. Morata’s difficult campaign culminated in his omission from Spain’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.

It was a major blow after a season to forget, marked by problems both on and off the pitch.

One thing, however, is certain. According to information gathered by TuttoMercatoWeb, Como’s obligation to buy Morata will be triggered on 1 July. The Lombardy club will pay €12m to AC Milan, as stipulated in the original agreement.

The deal follows the initial loan arrangement, which saw Como pay €1m to Milan, while a further €5m was paid to Galatasaray SK to secure the striker’s release. As a result, Como will become the full owners of Morata’s registration rights, with the player already under contract until 30 June 2029.

But what does the future hold?

At 33 and with a substantial salary worth around €8.33m per season, Como would be willing to consider a sale should a suitable offer arrive. At present, however, finding a buyer is far from straightforward precisely because of those wage demands.

As things stand, two scenarios appear most likely: another loan move or a stay at Como.

Morata remains the highest-paid player at the club, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by the hierarchy. For his part, the former Juventus FC striker has made his position clear: he wants to stay at Como.

The prospect of playing in the Champions League, combined with the club’s rapid growth and ambitious long-term project, are factors that strongly appeal to him.

Meanwhile, Milan will bank €12m and finally draw a line under one of the lingering issues in their squad planning.
