KO 4-1 and taunted by Arsenal fans: Martínez escorted down the tunnel
Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez did not hold back after Aston Villa’s heavy 4–1 defeat away to Arsenal. The 33-year-old Argentina goalkeeper lost his cool in the Emirates Stadium tunnel as he headed back to the dressing rooms, having picked the ball out of his net four times following goals from Gabriel, Zubimendi, Trossard and Gabriel Jesus.
What happened
A former Arsenal player himself, Martínez appeared visibly frustrated and agitated. He had to be restrained and then ushered away by a member of Villa’s staff after what looked like a heated exchange with supporters in the stands, according to the British tabloids. Arsenal fans, despite his past at the club, mocked the keeper after the rout.
From red and white past to Villa present
Martínez spent a decade at Arsenal, though he made just 38 appearances, spending much of that time out on loan. In 2020 he joined Aston Villa permanently for around £20m (approximately €23m). Villa arrived in north London in excellent form, having won their previous 11 matches in a row, including a stunning 2–1 away victory over Chelsea shortly after Christmas.
Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery reflected after the match:
“We competed fantastically in the first half and had momentum on our side. We won corners and defended well. We didn’t concede a single corner in the first half.”
