At 41, Thiago Silva has decided to enjoy one final European chapter, leaving Fluminense to accept Porto’s offer. Before his move to Farioli’s Dragões, however, there had also been talk of a possible return to Milan, a scenario many Rossoneri fans would have welcomed, eager to see again at San Siro the defender who wore the red and black between 2009 and 2012 and lifted the Scudetto in 2010/11.

In the end, nothing came of it – and Antonio Cassano explained why on Viva El Fútbol:
Ibrahimovic had given 100 per cent approval to sign him on a free transfer, without even demanding a huge salary. Thiago, being the top-level person he is, called Allegri, who told him he was looking for a striker. To Milan fans I want to say this: Mr Massimiliano Allegri refused and put triple padlocks on Thiago Silva’s return to AC Milan.”

Cassano went on:
The lad was even willing to act as a mentor to Gabbia. He could have closed a circle, after leaving when he didn’t want to leave. He wanted to come back on a free, letting Milan decide the figures. Allegri had to send a thousand messages just to say no. To Milan fans I say that Thiago didn’t arrive above all because of Allegri, who vetoed the move, while Ibrahimovic wanted him.
