At 40, Luka Modrić has very quickly established himself as a central figure in Massimiliano Allegri’s AC Milan. The evergreen Croatian midfielder gave a wide-ranging, in-depth interview to Corriere della Sera, reflecting on his life and career.

A story spanning all 40 years of Modrić’s life, in which he confirmed his long-standing affection for Milan’s colours:
Yes, as a kid I was a Milan fan, because Boban was the hero of my childhood. That Croatia was something incredible – it allowed us to re-emerge into the world after a devastating war. I wasn’t even 13 when my father gave me a Milan tracksuit as a present. And then life always surprises you, things happen that you think are impossible: I was convinced I’d finish my career at Real Madrid, but I always thought that if there had to be another club, it would be Milan. Here you play to win, always. The Scudetto? It’s possible, but it’s a long road.

What is the secret behind Modrić’s longevity? He explains it himself:
Love. Passion for football. Diet and training come second. I love normality and I don’t feel unique. If I hadn’t been a footballer, I would have liked to be a waiter – I was quite good at it. My parents and grandparents passed on certain values to me; I grew up around animals.
