Florian Wirtz, who turned 18 in May, has already piqued the interest of Europe's elite clubs with his eye-catching displays, but Bayer Leverkusen has preparations in place to maintain hold of its emerging teenage star.

In Leverkusen's 3-2 win over Celtic on Thursday, Wirtz's clever chip set up Moussa Diaby's late winner, putting them in the Europa League's final 16.

Since joining Leverkusen from the Cologne Under-17 squad in January 2020, Wirtz's rise has been nothing short of phenomenal.

In 16 appearances for Leverkusen this season, he has seven goals and nine assists.

Wirtz celebrated his 18th birthday by signing a contract extension with Leverkusen until 2026, only weeks before Havertz's Champions League exploits in Lisbon.

Leverkusen, who are currently in fourth place in the Bundesliga and on track to qualify for the Champions League next season, have a history of losing key players to stronger clubs.
