Mark van Bommel, a former Netherlands player, admits he was surprised when he was fired by Wolfsburg on Sunday after less than five months in charge after four straight Bundesliga losses.

Van Bommel expressed his disappointment in the decision in a statement, saying, "I am certain that together we would have managed to go back on the road to victory."

"I hope the team can quickly manage to turn things around."

Wolfsburg in a statement said they want to name his successor "in a timely manner".

"The bottom line was that there were more dividing than connecting factors," Wolfsburg's managing director Joerg Schmadtke said.

The 44-year-old was appointed in June after making 79 appearances for the Netherlands and appearing in the 2010 World Cup final. He began his term with four consecutive victories to lead the table.

Wolfsburg's fourth straight league loss came on Saturday, when they were defeated 2-0 at home by Freiburg, prompting chants of "Van Bommel out" from the crowd.
