Werder Bremen, German second-division club, has parted ways with head coach Markus Anfang, who resigned on Saturday amid an inquiry into the use of forged vaccination paperwork.

"Due to the very difficult situation for the club, the team, my family and myself, I have decided to resign as coach of Werder Bremen with immediate effect," Anfang said in a statement.

The 47-year-old has been at the center of a storm when it was revealed on Thursday that he is being investigated by authorities for allegedly falsifying documents to pretend he was fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Anfang had earlier refuted the charges in a statement on the Bremen website, which had vanished by Saturday.

Along with Anfang, assistant coach Florian Junge, who is also under investigation, has resigned.

Anfang's other assistant coach, Danijel Zenkovic, is in charge of Saturday's match against Schalke, who were relegated with Bremen last season.
