After the FIFA press release announcing the start of discussions with the other confederations on the international calendars, UEFA also wanted to officially communicate its position concerning the reform of reducing the waiting time between each World Cup to two years at from 2028.

The European body is opposed to the idea of organizing a biennial World Cup and does not understand the absence of negotiations between FIFA and the other continental federations to discuss this new highly discussed project.

“UEFA is disappointed with the methodology adopted, which has so far resulted in radical reform projects being communicated and openly promoted before having had the opportunity, together with other stakeholders, to participate in a any consultation meeting. [...] This project involves real dangers, namely the dilution of the value of the world football event number 1, the erosion of sporting opportunities for the weakest national teams by replacing regular matches with tournaments end, the risk for the sustainability of the players, forced to engage each year in high intensity summer competitions instead of benefiting from longer recovery breaks every other year,”
