According to L'Équipe, French goalkeeper Stéphane Ruffier is suing his former club Saint-Étienne for €5 million in damages after being fired in January.

Following a year of friction with the club that saw him thrown aside from the first squad, the former French international, now goalkeeping coach at Bayonne, was dismissed from his responsibilities six months before the end of his contract.

Ruffier was suspended in November 2020 after leaving an individual training session early. He had 383 appearances with Les Verts.

The club had intended to pay the goalkeeper €2 million, which would have covered the balance of his contract if he had stayed. Ruffier, on the other hand, is seeking €5 million in damages, owing to a loss of professional possibilities. The case is expected to go to trial in early 2022, with any potential punishment coming in 2023.
