TOP STORIES - Ex-Marseille Pascal Olmeta recalls CL title win in 1993
Following the death of former Marseille president Bernard Tapie this afternoon, former goalkeeper Pascal Olmeta told RMC Sport about his "kidnapping" of the Champions League trophy shortly after OM won the title in 1993.
The Corsican, who played for Marseille from 1990 to 1993, had been the target of Tapie's famed tough love, with the two men arguing in the days leading up to the final versus Milan. Following the owner's punishment, Olmeta was benched and had to fly to Munich with the fans and sleep separately from the rest of the team.
Fabien Barthez would start and play the entire match as Marseille became the first Ligue 1 team to win the Champions League. The players had partied together on the way back to Marseille, according to Olmeta, and he found himself in control of the cup. He then returned to Corsica with the trophy, which he planned to hold hostage there until his incentives were paid out. Olmeta left for Lyon when his matchday bonuses came and the Champions League trophy was returned.
