TOP STORIES - UNFP worried about Ligue 2’s proposed drop from 20 to 18 teams

As reported by Ouest France, the UNFP, French football’s player’s union, stated it was concerned over the league’s plan to reduce Ligue 2 from 20 teams to 18, a plan which 89% of players are opposed to.
The UNFP asked “Ligue 2 clubs to provide, preferably publicly, the tangible and factual elements justifying this decision.” Meanwhile, RMC report that Ligue 2 clubs are set to support an overhaul of the league structure to be submitted to the LFP next week, which would include a move to 18 clubs for the 2023/24 season to match Ligue 1’s own reduction of teams at the same time.
In theory, with two extra teams already finding their way to Ligue 2 for the 23/24 campaign, the second tier may have to relegate up to six sides, assuming promotion continues from the third tier.
