Messi, who has spent his entire career at Barcelona, is now a free agent for the first time, after his contract expired at the end of June. Any hopes of seeing away from the Camp Nou are dim, at least according to Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

Laporta, speaking at a private event in Barcelona, told reporters that "Messi's renewal is...progressing adequately". Whether that's true or just words to quell unrest among Barca fans is yet to be seen, but what is for sure is that Barcelona will need to get rid of some important salaries before they hope to be able to re-sign Messi. The club is in fact currently over the wage limitations imposed by La Liga, and will need to clear some space to fit the Argentine's new contract.

Messi just helped Argentina win the Copa America for the first time since 1993, playing a crucial role in the Albiceleste's success. Both Manchester City and PSG have been linked to a possible deal for the number 10, but nothing concrete has come to the surface, at least not yet. We'll see if Barcelona manage to keep Messi in the squad, and how much they are willing to spend to do so.
