Toni Kroos gave Real Madrid the lead after 14 minutes, however, Carlo Ancelotti had VAR to thank for the goal, as the referee had first ruled it out for offside.

When Vincius Junior sprinted onto a through ball to connect up with Marco Asensio, who then laid it into the path of Toni Kroos to steer into the bottom corner from 16 yards out, he was initially adjudged to be offside, but the goal was awarded after VAR intervened.

Karim Benzema volleyed home at the back post from David Alaba's cross to extend Real's advantage and score his 10th league goal of the season.

Vallecano took control of the game in the final 20 minutes when Oscar Trejo hit the post from the fringe of the area. That seemed to energize the Rayo players, and they were back in the game within minutes, thanks to a goal from replacement Radamel Falcao, who headed past Thibaut Courtois.
