Famed for its upsets and glorious cup runs by lower league teams, the Coupe de France last 64 draw threw up another unique encounter this week.

Jumeaux de M’Zoisia, a club from the Indian Ocean island of Mayotte which sits just off the coast of Madagascar, one of many teams from overseas French territories included in the French cup’s early stages, have fought their way through to this months 32nd finals. Their prize? A meeting with 2009 Ligue 1 winners Bordeaux.

As one of the biggest, and certainty the most far reaching, domestic cup competition in world football, sides from France’s overseas territories often make it far enough to be included in the same draw as Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 sides, setting up the chance for a huge cup upset. In 2017, Lille played Excelsior of Réunion, another French territory in the Indian Ocean, at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, winning 4-1. However, a team from Mayotte has never faced a team from France’s top two divisions.

Club Franciscain of Martinique are also only one game away from meeting Ligue 1 Nice in this year’s edition while Marseille and PSG will play fifth tier sides Cannet Rocheville and Entente Feignies Aulnoye FC respectively.
