Claudio Taffarel, a Brazilian goalkeeping icon, has joined Liverpool's first-team coaching staff, according to the club.

The 55-year-old will work with the Reds' goalkeepers alongside existing instructors John Achterberg and Jack Robinson.

Taffarel had a distinguished playing career, gaining over 100 matches for Brazil and helping them win the World Cup in 1994 before finishing runner-up in France four years later.

To the club's website, Jürgen Klopp explained the reasoning behind the appointment, saying:

“We want to build kind of our own philosophy in goalkeeping because we all agree it’s its own game, so that’s why we wanted to have another completely different view on it.

“We spoke to Alisson because two of the best goalies in the world are Brazilians and so we found a solution with bringing in Taffarel as a really nice addition to our whole coaching staff.

“We really think it can give us just a different view again, to look at different things.”

Taffarel will also continue his work with the Brazilian Football Federation in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup.
